Fuel / Road Trip Cost Calculator
Work out what a drive will actually cost in fuel — split it between passengers, and see the price per mile at a glance.
Units
How this is calculated
Fuel needed is your trip distance (doubled if round trip is on) divided by fuel efficiency in miles-per-gallon mode, or distance times consumption per 100 km in liters mode. Total cost is fuel needed multiplied by the price you enter — this calculator never pulls a live fuel price or currency exchange rate, so enter the price in whatever currency you actually pay in. Splitting the total across passengers just divides it evenly; it does not account for who drove or whose car it is.
Common questions
Why doesn't this calculator fill in the fuel price automatically?
Fuel prices change by the day and by the station, and vary by currency worldwide — a built-in "current price" would go stale immediately and only work for one country. Entering it yourself takes ten seconds and stays accurate for wherever you actually are.
How does splitting the cost between passengers work?
The total fuel cost is divided evenly by the number of passengers you enter. It's a simple even split, not a "who drove more" or "whose car" calculation — useful for a quick "here's what everyone owes" number on a group trip.
What's the difference between the two unit modes?
Imperial mode uses miles, US gallons, and miles-per-gallon (mpg) fuel efficiency. Metric mode uses kilometers, liters, and liters-per-100km consumption — the standard way fuel economy is expressed outside the US. Switching modes doesn't convert your numbers, it just changes which units the calculator expects.
Why might my actual fuel cost differ from this estimate?
Real-world consumption depends on driving style, how loaded the car is, terrain, traffic, and weather — the manufacturer or self-reported fuel efficiency number you enter is an average, not a guarantee for every trip. Treat the result as a solid planning estimate, not an exact figure.
How does the "round trip" toggle work?
Turning it on simply doubles the one-way distance you entered before calculating fuel needed and cost — enter the distance to your destination one way, and let the toggle handle the return leg.
