How this calculator works
Tap a grade to add it to the list — the average recalculates instantly. Every grade defaults to equal weight (100%); open "Show weights" to set a per-grade weight, for example if a final exam should count for more than regular coursework. In "By subject" mode, label each grade with a subject name — the calculator works out both a per-subject average and the overall average. In "Test score → grade" mode, enter the points scored and points possible — the calculator converts that into a grade using adjustable thresholds. Mark a grade "Don't know yet" and set a target average — the calculator solves for the grade you need on that remaining piece of work.
Frequently asked questions
How is the average calculated?
A weighted average: the sum of each grade times its weight, divided by the sum of the weights — Average = Σ(grade × weight) / Σweight. Leave every weight unchanged and it's a plain arithmetic mean. The rounded grade is the average rounded to the nearest whole scale step using standard round-half-up rounding; the "to the next grade" bar shows the exact remaining gap instead of hiding the rounding behind a single number.
How does the required-grade calculator work?
You mark one grade "Don't know yet" and set a target average — the calculator solves the average formula for that single unknown. It supports exactly one unknown grade at a time (the same scope most similar calculators use), a direct formula solve, not a brute-force search of "how many more A's". If the required value is above the top of the scale, the target isn't achievable at the current weights; if even the lowest possible grade already meets it, the target is already guaranteed.
Where do the score-to-grade thresholds come from?
There's no single universal standard for converting a percentage score into a letter grade — schools, courses, and instructors vary. The default thresholds shown (90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, below 60% = F) are a common convention, not the only one — edit them directly in the form to match your school or instructor.
How accurate is this calculation?
This is an estimate based on the numbers you enter. Your actual recorded grade depends on your specific school's or instructor's rules, including exact rounding thresholds and which assignments count at all — check with your instructor for anything borderline.
